BEAR UNIT

The Business Unit provides members with a place to learn new skills and gain confidence, while performing a variety of administrative work that is necessary for the clubhouse to function.  From creating the monthly newsletter to performing data entry necessary for funding, members gain experience in a wide variety of tasks and see a real positive effect from their work.

Staff and members work as a team on the essential work of Polaris House.  Work is always tailored to the interest and pace of each member.

Through developing the monthly newsletter and performing data entry, members can develop their computer skills, as well as their confidence as they master new software programs.

Members also gain experience with manning a multi-line phone at our reception desk.  Staff and members take turns greeting visitors, giving tours, and answering the phone.

The Bear Unit is also responsible for bill pay and pay roll, giving members the opportunity to learn some accounting procedures, as well as Quickbooks (checkbook computer program).

Members are encouraged to develop personal relationships with others through outreach to missing members, attending morning meetings, and making cards for birthdays and other special events.

WOLF UNIT

Wolf Unit members run the Polaris House kitchen, serving lunch every day. Members are involved in all aspects of the kitchen, from shopping trips to cooking, cleaning, and menu planning. Holiday feasts are always highlights, held on the actual day of the holiday. In a typical month over 200 meals will be served at Polaris House! There are 2 Serve Safe food safety managers on staff at Polaris House, and every member is given the opportunity to pursue advanced food safety training.

The Wolf Unit also leads Polaris House's education program. Opportunities range from GED courses to post-secondary education. Supports can range from traditional classroom experiences to technology- based training. Many members pursue driver's licenses and food worker cards. Polaris House also coordinates with other Juneau agencies to promote additional training opportunities.

Housing is also a major function of the Wolf Unit. Staff and members combine forces to pursue housing opportunities, and develop strategies to maintain housing for the long-term.
